Family Law
It is well known that the breakdown of a marriage or other relationship is one of the most difficult events that anyone will experience in their life, second only to a bereavement
You need a solicitor who will treat you with the individual attention that both you and your case requires. All our advice is in plain English and we will avoid using legal jargon.
We can also assess whether you qualify for 'Public Funding' (what used to be called 'Legal AId'), so that you can receive some assistance towards paying your costs.
However, Public Funding is not necessarily free. in some circumstances, even if you are elligible, you might have to pay a monthly contribution towards your Public Funding, or alternatively have to repay it out of any settlement that you receive.
Our solicitors are members of 'Resolution', a body of Family Solicitors that encourage a constructive and non-confrontational approach to resolving family disputes, as in these cases there are no winners or losers. It is a case of trying to find out what is the fairest solution.
Gail Cook is an associate legal executive with over 30 years experience in family law. She likes to think she doesnt look old enough to have practised for so long but it has to be admitted! Gail is a past secretary of the Nottinghamshire branch of the Institute of Legal Executives and is currently the Treasurer. Gail is a volunteer at Nottingham Law Centre. Gail deals with all aspects of family law including divorce; relationship breakdown generally; civil partnership dissolutions; the financial aspects of relationship breakdown; separation agreements; children cases including cases where social services are involved; cohabitation/pre-nuptial contracts and injunctions. Gail also has a lot of experience dealing with the Child Support Agency. Gail is a member of Resolution
Nicole Henham is a recently qualified solicitor, and deals with the full range of family cases, but also specialises in injuction cases, and has close links with Women's Aid. Nicole is also a member of Resolution.
Also, where children are involved, we will always encourage clients that their best interests are always put first.
Our Family Solicitors can advise and represent you on the following areas:-
- Divorce
- Financial Settlements
- Separation Agreements
- Unmarried Couples
- Children Issues, including Residence and Contact disputes
- Care Proceedings and Adoption
- Collaborative Law and Mediation
- Civil Partnerships
We also offer an all round approach to Family Law, and can advise you on other ways of resolving your disputes without Court action such as mediation and Collaborative Family Law.
The collaborative family law process is a relatively new way of dealing with family disputes. Each person appoints their own lawyer but instead of conducting negotiations between you and your partner by letter or phone you meet together to work things out face to face.
Each of you will have your lawyer by your side throughout the entire process and therefore you will benefit from legal advice as you go. The aim of collaborative law is to resolve family disputes without going to court.
